The baking story of Birmingham

Birmingham's sweet tooth runs deep. Alfred Bird, a local chemist, invented custard powder here, and the old works in Digbeth now house the Custard Factory creative quarter. The Cadbury family opened their first shop in the city in 1824 and later built the model village of Bournville around their chocolate factory. Modern Birmingham is one of Britain's most diverse cities, and its bakeries prove it: Jamaican patties and hardo bread in Handsworth, Punjabi and Kashmiri sweet centres along Ladypool Road and Stratford Road, and Irish soda bread in Digbeth, once the city's Irish quarter. The Bull Ring markets have traded on roughly the same spot since the 12th century, and they remain the best place to see the city's appetite at full stretch.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Egg custard tart – A baked custard tart finished with grated nutmeg, a fixture of Midlands bakery windows.
  • Jamaican patty – A golden, turmeric-tinted pastry turnover filled with spiced beef, chicken or vegetables.
  • Hardo bread – A dense, slightly sweet Jamaican white loaf sold in the city's Caribbean bakeries.

Bakery hunter's tip: Explore the Bull Ring's indoor and outdoor markets, then head to Soho Road in Handsworth or the Balti Triangle around Ladypool Road for Caribbean and South Asian bakeries.

Did you know? Alfred Bird created egg-free custard powder in Birmingham in 1837 because his wife could not eat eggs.
