The baking story of Bradford

Bradford grew rich on wool, and the mill workers packed into its terraces lived on bread, oatcakes and teacakes from corner bakeries. The arrival of families from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh after the Second World War transformed the city's food, and Bradford has repeatedly been crowned Curry Capital of Britain. Its naan, slapped against the walls of blazing tandoor ovens, is some of the best in the country, and sweet centres sell jalebi, barfi and gulab jamun by the boxful. Yorkshire traditions hold firm too: parkin for Bonfire Night, curd tarts scented with nutmeg, and soft teacakes split and buttered. Indoor market halls in the centre keep the old market-town habit of shopping for bread and produce alive.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Naan – A soft, blistered flatbread baked against the side of a tandoor oven.
  • Yorkshire parkin – A sticky, dense oatmeal and treacle gingerbread traditionally eaten around Bonfire Night.
  • Yorkshire curd tart – A pastry case of sweet, nutmeg-spiced curd cheese and currants.

Bakery hunter's tip: Leeds Road and Great Horton Road are lined with South Asian sweet centres and bakeries — go hungry and buy a mixed box of mithai to share.

Did you know? Bradford won the Curry Capital of Britain title in several consecutive years during the 2010s.
