The baking story of Conwy
Conwy's medieval walls and castle, built for Edward I, enclose one of the best-preserved walled towns in Europe, and the town has been trading in food ever since it received its royal charter. Every 13 September, Conwy holds its Honey Fair, a tradition said to date back to that medieval charter, when beekeepers from across north Wales sell honey along the High Street. The town is also known for its mussels, gathered in the estuary using traditional hand-raking methods. Welsh cakes, bara brith and honey cakes appear in local bakeries and tea rooms, and the quayside, home to a tiny house said to be the smallest in Great Britain, makes a lovely spot to eat them while watching the boats.
