The baking story of Huddersfield

Huddersfield, a textile town in the Colne valley, is famous for fine worsted cloth and as the birthplace of rugby league, which split from rugby union at a meeting in the town's George Hotel in 1895. Its food is everyday West Yorkshire: pork pies, parkin, curd tarts and, crucially, the bread roll — known locally as a breadcake, a teacake or simply a bun, depending on who you ask and whether it has currants in it. The town's Victorian heritage is preserved in its grand railway station and its markets. Post-war migration from the Caribbean, Pakistan, India and Eastern Europe has made Huddersfield one of the region's most diverse towns, and its bakeries sell patties, naan and rye loaves too.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Yorkshire teacake – A soft round bun, sometimes plain and sometimes fruited, depending on who's baking.
  • Yorkshire parkin – A dark, sticky gingerbread made with oatmeal and treacle.
  • Pork pie – A hot-water-crust pie of seasoned pork, eaten cold with pickle.

Bakery hunter's tip: Explore the Victorian streets around St George's Square and the town's markets, then try a pork pie from a traditional local butcher or baker.

Did you know? In much of West Yorkshire a 'teacake' may simply be a plain bread roll, while elsewhere the word means a fruited bun.
