The baking story of Kendal

Kendal mint cake — a dense, glassy-white bar of sugar and peppermint oil — has fuelled walkers and climbers for well over a century. According to local tradition it was discovered by accident in the 19th century, when a confectioner making clear mints let the mixture turn cloudy. Its fame peaked in 1953, when it travelled with the British expedition that made the first ascent of Everest. Kendal, the 'auld grey town' at the gateway to the Lake District, has a long trading history as a wool town, and its market dates back to a charter of 1189. The South Lakes supply lamb, Cumberland sausage and damsons from the Lyth Valley, and local bakers sell rum butter and sticky toffee puddings.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Kendal mint cake – A hard, sweet bar of sugar and peppermint, a fellwalker's energy boost.
  • Cumberland rum nicky – A tart of dates, ginger and rum butter.
  • Damson crumble – Tart Lyth Valley damsons under a buttery crumble.

Bakery hunter's tip: Explore the old yards and alleyways off Highgate and Stricklandgate, and stock up on mint cake before heading into the fells.

Did you know? Damsons from the Lyth Valley near Kendal are celebrated each spring with a local Damson Day.
