The baking story of Kirkcaldy

Kirkcaldy, known as the Lang Toun for its long main street along the Fife shore, was the birthplace of the economist Adam Smith and once a world centre of linoleum making. Every April it hosts the Links Market, which claims to be the longest street fair in Europe, stretching along the Esplanade with rides, candyfloss, doughnuts and toffee apples. The fair has roots going back to the early 14th century. Kirkcaldy's bakers keep Fife's traditions alive with Scotch pies, bridies, butteries and morning rolls, and sweet treats such as tablet and caramel shortcake. The fishing villages of the East Neuk, a short drive up the coast, add smoked fish and seafood to the local larder.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Scotch pie – A hot-water-crust pie of peppery minced meat.
  • Steak bridie – A crescent of flaky pastry filled with beef and onion.
  • Caramel shortcake – Scotland's name for shortbread layered with caramel and chocolate.

Bakery hunter's tip: Visit in April for the Links Market on the Esplanade, or walk the Fife Coastal Path from the town with a bakery picnic.
