The baking story of Peterborough
Peterborough's Norman cathedral, with its extraordinary west front, has watched the city grow from a market town on the edge of the Fens into a designated new town of the 1960s. Brickmaking transformed the area in the 20th century, and when the brickworks recruited workers from southern Italy in the 1950s, many families settled here, giving Peterborough one of the largest Italian communities in Britain. Italian bread, pastries and delis followed, and later arrivals from Pakistan, Poland, Lithuania and elsewhere added naan, rye loaves and poppy-seed cakes. Around the city, Fenland farms grow wheat, potatoes and sugar beet, while the old county of Huntingdonshire, to the south, is home to fidget pie.
Local bakes to look out for
- Focaccia – Flat, olive-oil-rich Italian bread, sold by the city's Italian bakers and delis.
- Makowiec – A Polish poppy-seed roll, popular in the city's Eastern European bakeries.
- Huntingdon fidget pie – A pie of gammon, apple and onion from neighbouring Huntingdonshire.
Bakery hunter's tip: Explore the cathedral precincts and Cathedral Square, then look for Italian, Polish and South Asian bakeries along Lincoln Road.
Did you know? Peterborough's Italian community grew after local brickworks recruited thousands of workers from southern Italy in the 1950s.
