The baking story of Rochdale

On a December evening in 1844, a group of weavers and other workers known as the Rochdale Pioneers opened a small shop on Toad Lane, selling basic foodstuffs at fair prices and sharing the profits among members. It is regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement, and the original shop is now a museum. The flour and oatmeal on its shelves tell you much about the diet of Lancashire mill towns: bread, oatcakes, porridge and pies. Rochdale's bakers still sell meat-and-potato pies, barm cakes, parkin and Eccles cakes, while its South Asian communities, largely of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage, add naan and sweets. The surrounding Pennine moors make fine walking country.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Meat and potato pie โ€“ Minced beef and potato in shortcrust, a mill-town staple.
  • Lancashire parkin โ€“ A sticky oatmeal gingerbread eaten around Bonfire Night.
  • Barm cake โ€“ A soft, flat bread roll for every kind of butty.

Bakery hunter's tip: Visit the Rochdale Pioneers Museum on Toad Lane and the grand Victorian town hall, then seek out a traditional pie shop nearby.

Did you know? When the Rochdale Pioneers opened their Toad Lane shop in 1844, their first stock was just butter, sugar, flour, oatmeal and candles.
