The baking story of Slough

Slough is often the butt of jokes, but it has an impressive food heritage. In 1932 one of the world's best-known chocolate bars was first made in a factory here, and the town's trading estate, one of the earliest of its kind, became home to famous food and drink makers. Long before that, a retired brewer named Richard Cox raised a new apple from a pip in his garden at Colnbrook, just east of the town โ€” the Cox's Orange Pippin, which became one of England's favourite eating apples. Slough today is one of the most diverse towns in Britain, with large Punjabi, Pakistani and Polish communities, and its bakeries and sweet centres reflect that variety.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Naan โ€“ Tandoor-baked flatbread from the town's South Asian bakeries.
  • Pinni โ€“ A rich Punjabi sweet of roasted wheat flour, ghee and nuts, popular in winter.
  • Apple cake โ€“ A classic English teatime cake, best made with local eating apples.

Bakery hunter's tip: Explore the bakeries and sweet centres around Farnham Road, and in autumn look for Cox's apples at farm shops nearby.

Did you know? The Cox's Orange Pippin apple was raised by Richard Cox at Colnbrook, near Slough, around 1825.
