The baking story of Southend-on-Sea

Southend-on-Sea, made a city in 2022, has been east London's favourite seaside escape since Victorian times, when trains brought day-trippers to its beaches and its famous pier — the longest pleasure pier in the world, stretching well over a mile into the Thames Estuary. The seafront still sells doughnuts, candyfloss and rock. Just along the coast at Leigh-on-Sea, the cockle sheds of Old Leigh have boiled and sold fresh shellfish for generations, and a pot of cockles with vinegar is the classic snack. Essex farmland surrounds the city, famous for fruit-growing and jam-making, and Southend's bakers serve London-style classics such as bread pudding and jam doughnuts alongside sourdough from newer independents.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Jam doughnut – A sugar-rolled fried bun filled with jam, the seafront treat of choice.
  • Bread pudding – A dense, spiced, fruit-packed bake made from stale bread, sold by the slice.

Bakery hunter's tip: Walk or ride the pier, then head west to Old Leigh for cockles and the independent cafés of Leigh Broadway.

Did you know? Cockles are still landed and cooked in the sheds of Old Leigh, part of a shellfish trade that goes back centuries.
