The baking story of Swindon

Swindon was transformed in the 1840s when the Great Western Railway built its locomotive works here, creating a new town of terraced houses for thousands of workers. The company also built a railway village with shops, an institute and a medical fund for workers' families, later cited as an inspiration for the NHS. Feeding the works meant plenty of bread, pies and cake, and Wiltshire's lardy cake — rich, sticky bread dough layered with lard, sugar and fruit — was a much-loved treat. Swindon's Old Town, on the hill, is far older than the railway and has its own market-town character. The surrounding Wiltshire countryside is known for bacon, ham and wheat grown on the chalk downs.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Wiltshire lardy cake – A sticky, caramelised bread of lard, sugar and dried fruit.

Bakery hunter's tip: Explore Old Town for independent cafés around Wood Street, and visit the STEAM museum to learn how the railway shaped the town.

Did you know? The Wiltshire cure for bacon and ham was developed in the 19th century in the nearby town of Calne.
