The baking story of Winchester

Winchester was the capital of Alfred the Great's Wessex, and his statue stands at the foot of the High Street. Alfred also stars in England's best-known baking legend: hiding from the Danes in the Somerset marshes, he was asked by a peasant woman to watch her cakes on the fire, became lost in thought and let them burn. Whatever the truth, Winchester has made up for it since. The cathedral city has a busy café culture, and its farmers' markets are among the largest in the country, bringing in Hampshire bread, cheese, watercress and strawberries. The chalk streams of the Itchen valley and the fields of the South Downs give the county a generous larder, and lardy cake remains a Hampshire favourite.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Hampshire lardy cake – A sticky, layered bread of lard, sugar and dried fruit.
  • Griddle cake – A simple flat cake cooked over heat — the kind Alfred supposedly let burn.

Bakery hunter's tip: Check the dates of the regular farmers' market, then walk the High Street past the Buttercross towards the cathedral close.

Did you know? The tale of King Alfred burning the cakes first appears in a life of St Neot written long after Alfred's death.
