The baking story of York

York's medieval streets, from the Shambles to Stonegate, have fed visitors for nearly two thousand years, but the city's modern food fame is sweeter. In the 19th and 20th centuries York became one of Britain's great chocolate and confectionery cities, home to the factories of the Rowntree and Terry families, and many of the nation's favourite bars and boxed chocolates were created here. Yorkshire baking is everywhere too. The curd tart is a York speciality, and fat rascals — big, rich, fruit-studded scones, often decorated with cherries and almonds — are a North Yorkshire teatime treat. The Shambles Market, just off the famous medieval street, sells local bread, pies and cakes daily.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Yorkshire curd tart – Sweet curd cheese, currants and spice baked in a pastry case.
  • Fat rascal – A large, rich, fruity scone-like cake decorated with cherries and almonds.
  • Yorkshire teacake – A soft, fruited bun, split, toasted and buttered.

Bakery hunter's tip: Arrive early to walk the Shambles before the crowds, then browse the Shambles Market and the tea rooms of Stonegate and Petergate.

Did you know? Traditional Yorkshire curd tarts were flavoured with allspice, known in older recipes as Jamaica pepper.
