The baking story of Coleraine

Coleraine stands on the River Bann, a few miles from the Atlantic and the dramatic Causeway Coast. The Bann has been famous for its salmon and eels for centuries, and the village of Bushmills, with its long whiskey-making history, lies just along the coast. Coleraine's bakers serve the full range of Northern Irish griddle breads — soda and potato farls, wheaten and pancakes — along with traybakes and Paris buns. Each August, the nearby town of Ballycastle hosts the Ould Lammas Fair, one of Ireland's oldest fairs, where stalls sell yellowman, a crunchy golden honeycomb toffee, and dulse, a dried red seaweed eaten as a salty snack. Portrush and Portstewart add seaside cafés and ice-cream parlours.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Soda farl – Griddle-baked soda bread, a staple of the Ulster fry.
  • Wheaten bread – A wholemeal soda loaf, slightly sweet and nutty.
  • Yellowman – A chewy-crunchy golden honeycomb toffee sold at the Ould Lammas Fair.

Bakery hunter's tip: Combine Coleraine's bakeries with a drive along the Causeway Coast to Portstewart and Portrush, and visit Ballycastle in late August for the Ould Lammas Fair.

Did you know? Yellowman and dulse are the traditional treats of Ballycastle's Ould Lammas Fair, held on the last Monday and Tuesday of August.
