The baking story of Eastbourne

Eastbourne, a gracious Victorian resort developed by the Dukes of Devonshire, has a long seafront of white hotels, a pier and a bandstand, with the chalk cliffs of Beachy Head rising to the west. Afternoon tea, ice cream and seaside cafés are part of its character. It also has a claim to modern pudding history: banoffee pie — a biscuit or pastry base layered with toffee, bananas and cream — was created in the early 1970s at a restaurant in the village of Jevington, just outside the town. Sussex's older bakes, such as plum heavies, belong to the surrounding Downs. Eastbourne's bakers and tea rooms serve scones, Victoria sponges and Sussex treats to visitors and locals alike.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Banoffee pie – A base layered with toffee, sliced banana and whipped cream.
  • Sussex plum heavies – Flat, currant-dotted teatime cakes from the Downs.

Bakery hunter's tip: Take tea along the seafront or in the independent Little Chelsea area around Grove Road, then walk up onto the Downs towards Beachy Head.

Did you know? Banoffee pie was invented in the early 1970s at a restaurant in Jevington, a village just outside Eastbourne.
