The baking story of Hastings

Hastings' Old Town is home to one of Britain's most remarkable fishing fleets: its boats have no harbour and are launched straight off the shingle beach of the Stade, then winched back up at the end of the day. Tall, black-tarred net huts, built to store fishing gear, line the beach, and fresh fish is sold from stalls nearby. Hastings is, of course, famous for 1066, though the battle actually took place a few miles inland at the town now called Battle. Sussex baking traditions such as plum heavies and pond puddings are well known here, and the Old Town's narrow lanes, along with the revived seafront at St Leonards, are packed with independent cafés and bakeries.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Sussex plum heavies – Flat, currant-studded scone-like cakes.
  • Sussex pond pudding – A steamed suet pudding with a whole lemon inside.

Bakery hunter's tip: Walk the Stade to see the net huts and fishing boats, then explore the Old Town's George Street and High Street for cafés and bakeries.

Did you know? Hastings is home to what is often described as the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe.
