The baking story of Limavady

Limavady, in the Roe Valley beneath the cliffs of Binevenagh, is where in 1851 the collector Jane Ross is said to have noted down the melody now known as the Londonderry Air — the tune of 'Danny Boy' — from a passing fiddler. The town is surrounded by rich farmland stretching down to Lough Foyle, and its food traditions are those of the north-west: griddle-cooked soda farls and potato bread, wheaten loaves, and thick pancakes cooked on the griddle for tea. Around Halloween, potato apple bread, with sweet sliced apple sealed inside potato dough, is a seasonal treat. The Roe Valley Country Park and the long strand at Benone make good places for a picnic.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Potato apple bread – Potato dough wrapped around sliced apple and cooked on the griddle.
  • Soda farl – Griddle-cooked soda bread quarters, split and buttered or fried.
  • Wheaten bread – A nutty brown soda loaf made with buttermilk.

Bakery hunter's tip: Pick up farls and wheaten from a local bakery, then head to Roe Valley Country Park or Benone Strand for a picnic.

Did you know? Potato apple bread is a traditional Ulster treat, especially around Halloween, when the new season's apples are in.
