The baking story of Newquay

Newquay is Britain's best-known surfing town, but its story began with pilchards. On Towan Headland stands the whitewashed Huer's Hut, a lookout from which a huer scanned the sea for pilchard shoals and signalled the seine boats waiting in the bay below. The pilchard harvest fed the town and was salted and exported, and Cornish fish pies and heavy cakes belong to that era. Today Newquay's food is shaped by its beaches: pasties eaten on the sand, saffron buns and doughnuts from bakeries near the front, and cream teas after a day in the waves. Its many beaches, from Fistral to Watergate Bay, make perfect picnic spots in every season.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Cornish pasty – The perfect beach lunch: beef, potato, swede and onion in pastry.
  • Saffron bun – A golden fruited bun, lovely toasted and buttered.
  • Heavy cake – A flat, dense currant cake linked to the pilchard fishery.

Bakery hunter's tip: Walk up to the Huer's Hut on Towan Headland for views over the bay, then take a pasty down to Fistral or Towan Beach.

Did you know? When a huer spotted pilchards, the cry of 'hevva!' sent the seine boats out to encircle the shoal.
