The baking story of Penzance
Penzance, near the western tip of Cornwall, looks across Mount's Bay to St Michael's Mount, and its neighbour Newlyn is one of England's major fishing ports. The area's most famous dish comes from the nearby village of Mousehole: stargazy pie, in which whole pilchards poke their heads through the pastry crust, gazing up at the sky. It is eaten on Tom Bawcock's Eve, just before Christmas, honouring a legendary fisherman who braved a storm to feed the starving village. Penzance's bakers sell pasties, saffron buns, Cornish fairings and heavy cake, and each June the Golowan Festival and its Mazey Day fill the streets with parades, music and food stalls.
Local bakes to look out for
- Stargazy pie – A fish pie with whole pilchards peeping through the crust.
- Cornish pasty – The classic side-crimped pastry of beef and vegetables.
- Cornish fairing – A crunchy, spiced ginger biscuit.
Bakery hunter's tip: Explore Chapel Street and Market Jew Street, then walk the promenade to Newlyn for fresh fish; visit in late June for Mazey Day.
Did you know? Mousehole's stargazy pie is traditionally eaten on 23 December, Tom Bawcock's Eve.
