The baking story of Bury St Edmunds

Bury St Edmunds grew around the great abbey that housed the shrine of St Edmund, King of East Anglia, and its medieval grid of streets was laid out by the monks. In 1214, according to tradition, England's barons met at the abbey and swore an oath that led to Magna Carta the following year. The town remains an important market centre — its market still fills the Cornhill and Buttermarket twice a week — and its long brewing tradition continues. Bury is also in the heart of sugar beet country, and East Anglian sugar has gone into countless British bakes. Suffolk rusks, huffers and fruit cakes fill local bakery windows, and the Abbey Gardens are perfect for a picnic.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Suffolk rusk – A crisp, twice-baked round, perfect with cheese.
  • Huffer – A large triangular soft roll from East Anglia.

Bakery hunter's tip: Visit on a Wednesday or Saturday for the market on the Cornhill and Buttermarket, then picnic in the Abbey Gardens.

Did you know? Bury St Edmunds is home to one of the UK's sugar beet factories, turning East Anglian beet into sugar.
