The baking story of Forfar

Forfar's gift to Scottish baking is the bridie, a horseshoe-shaped pasty of minced or chopped beef and onion in flaky or shortcrust pastry, crimped along its curved edge. It has been made in the town since at least the 19th century, and its origins are much debated — one story links the name to a wedding feast, or 'bride's meal', and another to a travelling food seller. Local loyalties to particular bakers run deep. Forfar is the county town of Angus, set in rich farmland at the foot of the Angus Glens, a landscape of berry fields, cattle and barley. Glamis Castle, the childhood home of the late Queen Mother, is just a few miles down the road.

Local bakes to look out for

  • Forfar bridie – A horseshoe-shaped pasty of beef and onion, crimped along the curve.
  • Buttery – A rich, flaky, salty breakfast roll.
  • Scotch pie – A round hot-water-crust pie of minced meat.

Bakery hunter's tip: Buy bridies hot from a Forfar bakery, then head into the Angus Glens for a picnic with a view.

Did you know? By tradition, a Forfar bridie with one hole in the top has no onion, while two holes mean onion inside.
